Creating That Perfect Product Photography

Nail your product photography and you’ll boost both confidence and conversions. Great images don’t just show a product. They make people want it. Here’s how to do it right with Flat Frog.

1. Understand the Product First

Before you set up lights, study what you’re shooting. Ask yourself:

  • What is the product’s shape, texture and key feature?

  • What do you want to highlight visually?

Knowing this upfront informs every decision you make on lighting, angles and styling.

2. Get Your Lighting Right

Lighting is the single most important factor in product photography. Good light brings out texture, colour and quality. Soft, even lighting to avoid harsh shadows unless you’re aiming for a dramatic look, while side lighting can add depth.

When in a studio setting, it is vital to consider your main light positioning and reflector use or second to create your desired texture and shadows.

3. Choose the Right Background

A clean, minimal backdrop keeps focus on the product. White or neutral tones work well for most ecommerce shots.
If you’re adding texture or colour, make sure it complements the product’s palette rather than distract from it.

4. Use a Stable Camera Setup

Sharpness matters. Even small motion blur makes photos look cheap. Always use a tripod, and if you’re shooting small products, clamp your camera so you can make consistent shots. Consider tethered shooting so you view photos on a bigger screen as you shoot.

5. Capture Multiple Angles

Different views show off features and help customers understand the product better, with eye-level, 45-degree and overhead shots being the standard staples. For small items, close-ups or detailed shots highlight quality and texture.

6. Consider Props and Context

Props can add story and scale, but they must support the product not steal the show. Keep them subtle and relevant to the brand or use case. For lifestyle content, show the product in context, people using it, natural environments, everyday scenarios. This builds an emotional connection.

7. Keep a Consistent Style

Consistency across a product range builds trust and strengthens a brand’s visual language. You can do this by using the same lighting setup for all products in a series, and matching angles, cropping and background tones where possible.

8. Don’t Skip Post-Production

Editing can refine images without changing the truth of what customers see. You may want to clean up dust, correct colour, adjust exposure or retouch reflections or hotspots.

9. Think About Platform Requirements

Different channels want different ratios:

  • Square for ecommerce listings.

  • Vertical for social ads.

  • Horizontal for banners.

Crop with intention so images look polished wherever they appear.

Great product photography doesn’t happen by accident. It’s a blend of preparation, lighting, and attention to detail through thoughtful styling. Flat Frog spend time refining each part of the process, meaning your imagery will reflect the quality of your products.
